For people calling me an asshole/hipster for being upset at Adele winning Album of the Year…
Please note that I am only upset at her winning album of the year. Rolling in the Deep is a fantastic song, deserving of most awards thrown its way. I think Adele is a wonderful talent with a beautiful voice. However, 21 is a one-dimensional sobfest of songs pandering to the audience that screams “This song is about my lifeeeeeee” whenever it comes on at a bar/party. I thought that 19 showed depth, I loved it and many of the songs on it. 21 shows the subtle and ominous encroachment of formulaic music to a voice that I think has enormous promise and potential. I would hate to see it squandered on formulaic, “My ex-boyfriend is a mean man” albums for the remainder of her career.
This is the same reason I threw my laptop at the wall when John Mayer came out with that poppy Battle Studies album. Dude, I listened to Heavier Things and Continuum, I heard you make that guitar sing like few modern guitarists can, and you provided me with the same shit I can hear if I spin my radio dial to any station? Come on.
So Adele’s voice is John Mayer’s guitar for me, I love hearing it but want to be challenged by it. I want to see it provide me with something new and different, and Adele and 21 are the wrong direction for me. So yeah, that’s my issue. Rant over.
